What is the Difference between Alcohol and Water Based Markers

The difference between alcohol and water based markers is actually quite simple. As the name implies alcohol markers use alcohol as the base, while water markers have a water base.

The main difference however is what can be achieved with the different markers, depending on the final result you wish to achieve.

Alcohol Based Markers

Alcohol markers get their colour from dye or pigment which is based in an alcohol solution. This allows for quick drying and layering techniques.  With an alcohol-based marker, as soon as the ink touches paper, the alcohol evaporates, this means you are far less likely to get any streaks, lines or blurry and smudged artwork.  If you wish to create multi-toned highlights and smooth blending for your artwork then these are the best kind of markers to use.  The ink allows you to overlay which will enable you to create many layers, without smudging.

Alcohol based markers are permanent on most surfaces, hence the other popular name of ‘permanent markers’. If creating Ombré colour effects and vibrant colour shading is your thing, these remarkable markers are just what you need.

Water Based Markers

The composition of water based markers is a mixture of ink and water, which also make them odourless and incredibly safe for children to use. When water based markers are first applied to paper they can be obviously quite wet and cannot be blended like with other permanent markers. Water based markers can be manipulated to create amazing pieces of work depending on the type of surface you are using and the different techniques you try.

As water based markers are ‘lighter’ than alcohol based, it allows you to create a unique watercolour look for your artwork. Along with a brush pen, you can create different effects, dry techniques, fine lines and of course calligraphy art. Non-toxic, acid-free, quick-drying and fade resistant, there really isn’t a reason why you shouldn’t give them a go.

Ohuhu markers have a huge variety of vibrant colours, brush sets, tips and blenders. These allow you to create masterpiece after masterpiece knowing you are using top of the range ink with Ohuhu.
